Polio, or poliomyelitis, is an acute illness brought on when one of three types of polio virus (types 1, 2, or 3) invades the gastro-intestinal tract. It is highly infectious viral disease. The virus has an affinity for nervous tissue, and can cause paralysis if it reaches the central nervous system. Polio is a vaccine preventable disease.
The polio vaccine was introduced in Ireland in 1957 and the last recorded case was in 1984.
Polio is a notifiable disease and suspect cases of polio (Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) cases in children < 15 years of age are notified and investigated to out rule polio.
