Viral encephalitis, not otherwise specified, in Ireland

Encephalitis is an inflammatory process of the brain associated with neurological dysfunction. Most cases require hospitalisation. Acute viral encephalitis has been a notifiable disease in Ireland since 1981.

Viral encephalitis data are collected by HPSC with the assistance of Departments of Public Health, Microbiology Laboratories and the National Virus Reference Laboratory (NVRL).
