Leprosy is a curable chronic infectious disease caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium leprae (M. leprae). The disease mainly affects the skin, nerves, nose, throat and eyes. Treatment in the early stages of illness can prevent disability caused by the disease.
Leprosy is a notifiable disease in Ireland.
