West Nile Virus (WNV) belongs to a group of viruses known as ‘arboviruses’ (viruses that are transmitted by insects). People are infected by the bite of an infected mosquito. WNV principally affects the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord). The symptoms vary according to the severity of infection. West Nile Virus is a notifiable disease in Ireland.
In June we started again, as done in previous years, with the seasonal monitoring of West Nile virus during the transmission season, providing weekly updates on the situation.
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control produces West Nile Fever maps of affected areas and provides weekly updates on the situation during the West Nile virus transmission season.
